Intimacy can be a beautiful experience for people and rewarding to each person’s health. More blood flows to the heart, and dopamine and serotonin are released. While normally a private matter, social design lab Studio Roosegaarde has designed a dress that’ll transform the sharing of intimacy to a fashion statement.
Predictably dubbed Intimacy, this dress comes in black and white. The material is made out of artificial leather that is embedded with conductive smart electronic-foils throughout the dress. These e-foils are what makes Intimacy dresses so unique. When electrified via the body’s stimuli, the opaque e-foils become transparent. Earlier designs merely electrified the e-foils through heat, whereas the Intimacy 2.0 now allows them to purely react to an accelerating heart rate.
When asked why they believe fashion and technology will have a deep enough connection to become a hit in the industry, Liza Blummel of Studio Roosegaarde told Serious Wonder that:
“Technology is becoming more and more a part of our lives. It is an enrichment of our experiences. Wearing it on our body is, for now, the closest way to use technology. It creates opportunities in expressing your identity and therefore Daan thinks this could be the next step in the fashion industry. Here is where our dress steps in. Intimacy expresses the wearer’s state of emotions in an extravagant way.”
Like a heart beat, the Intimacy dress begins fluctuating from opaque to transparent depending on the wearer’s level of sexual arousal. If she were to come close to someone for whom she had no sexual desire, the dress would remain opaque. Of course, an accelerating heart rate doesn’t just result from sexual arousal, but also anger and exhaustion. Either one of these emotions would result in the dress revealing what’s hidden beneath.
The interactive dynamic between people and technology is achieved via Intimacy. Say two people wearing Intimacy 2.0 clothing were to come close to each other, both fluctuating in transparency as they got closer. If others nearby were watching, they too could potentially begin fluctuating if wearing Intimacy. As a result of two peoples’ sexual arousal with one another, a cascade of transparent fluctuations occur – a group of strangers instantly becoming interconnected.
“Social interactions determine the garmentsʼ level of transparency, creating a sensual play of disclosure.” – Studio Roosegaarde
Studio Roosegaarde has stated that they’re currently in production of an Intimacy 3.0, which’ll include men’s wear alongside women.
