As a futurist, there’s no other sci-fi film in history that sparked my imagination like Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell. With its fast paced action, coupled with a science fiction future of cyborgs and biohacking, the film delivered the ultimate cyberpunk outlook. Even more captivating was its opener, laying down the grounds for the entire story’s overall setting—a world where life is created technologically, rather than biologically.

This amazing, and very graphic (definitely NSFW), opening scene became an inspiration for a group of artists, led by graphic designer Ash Thorp. Given the film’s international cult following, these artists set out to re-create live-action still frames of that very scene, providing a modern-day touch into what is already considered an absolutely marvelous film.
