The future has arrived! Coming out of the shadows at this year’s TED conference was something no one was expecting – at least, not within this time frame. Believe me when I say this: the 3D printing industry has just re-revolutionized itself all over again with Carbon3D‘s CLIP technology, which is now partnered with venture capital firm Sequoia Capital and technology investor Silver Lake Kraftwerk. If you thought 3D printers before this were amazing, you haven’t seen anything yet!

Where previous 3D printers took anywhere from a few hours to nearly half a day in printing objects, Carbon3D’s CLIP (Continuous Liquid Interface Production) has the capability in printing the exact same objects 25-100x faster! As shown in the videos provided below both objects were printed in just minutes, as opposed to the notorious several-hour-printing.
As shown in the image above, the Carbon3D CLIP is not only capable in printing objects much quicker than previous 3D printers, but is subsequently capable in printing objects with a smooth texture, enhancing their emulated realness. The reason it can do this is through a new revolutionary printing method which combines light and oxygen with UV curable resin.
The process goes like this: the 3D printer first starts by projecting light into the UV curable resin. As the build platform on the top begins lifting up, the objects begin to grow. Similar to a contact lens, there’s an oxygen permeable window which controls the oxygen flux, whereby it creates what is known as a “dead zone” – a thin layer of uncured resin between the window and object. Thus making the printing process constant and smooth, as opposed to previous printers, which relied on stacking 2D prints on top of each other.

Organ printing is a great example because, before 3D printing ever became popular, the only means people could think of acquiring organs was through organ donations, which forced people into waiting lists that most would die remaining in line. Those who survived, however, still had to wait months, if not years, before acquiring the necessary organs in keeping them alive. Once 3D printing came into the limelight, all bets were off.
